I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference. (Robert Frost)

Ask the students to identify which words are nouns. Then tell the students that today they will discern between the different types of nouns and identify the differences.

Procedures:  Tell the students to copy anything I write into the grammar section of their notebook.

 1) Ask students to define a noun and give examples. (2 minutes)

-- Ask for an example of a person, a place, and an object.

        a.   A noun is a word that names a person, place or thing.

2) Write an example of a common and proper noun on the overhead and ask the students how they are different.

--Give examples and have students say whether common or proper.  (4 minutes)

        a.    Common noun is a general name for a person, place, thing, or idea.

        b.    Common nouns are usually not capitalized.

        c.    Proper noun is the name of a particular person, place, thing, or idea.

        d.    A proper noun is always capitalized.

3) Write an example of a concrete and abstract noun and ask the students how they are different.  Give examples and have students produce their own examples. (4 minutes)

        a.    Concrete nouns name things that you can see or touch.

        b.    Abstract nouns name ideas, qualities, or feelings that cannot be seen or touched.

4) Write an example of a singular and plural noun and ask the students how they are different. Have the students produce their own examples. (4 minutes)

        a.  Singular nouns name only one person, place, or thing.

        b.  Plural nouns name more than one person, place, or thing.

5) scategories game: Directions- The students will divide into groups, only when told by the teacher to do so, and will be given a worksheet. The worksheet will have 10 different categories listed, followed by a blank table.  The teacher will pick a random letter and have the students write a noun for each category that starts with the given letter.  The students must label whether the noun is common or proper, concrete or abstract, and singular or plural.  The students will only have 3 minutes to complete the ten categories. After the 3 minutes are finished, the students will compare their answers and receive one point for each noun that no other group member has.  If more than one person in the group wrote the same noun, then the students receive no points for that category. The more original the noun, the better the students’ scores will be.  (15 minutes)

6) Sensei Hayman ninja reading. Identifying nouns. Turn in. (10 minutes)

Closure: Ask the students about what the class just learned.

Review definitions for different nouns again. Ask the students for each definition and to provide an example.

Talk about how singular and plural nouns determine the verb to give lead in to S/V agreement next block. (6 minutes)

Sensei Hayman was born in Japan. While there, he trained to become a ninja. He studied hard and learned how to fight many kinds of people. He could disappear like smoke. He fought for justice and peace. One time, Master Hayman was walking in the forest by Lake Hanoi when an assassin jumped from behind a tree like a nightmare. The killer threw five ninja stars at Sensei Hayman, but the stars missed their target. Quickly, Master Hayman withdrew his ninja smoke bomb and threw it to the ground. Sensei Hayman escaped to his underground ninja lair.
