Scholarships, Fellowships, etc

Please add any opportunities you come across that might be suitable for our students.  Let's get them out of the Delta and experiencing some other part of the world.

General Scholarship Resources

FastWeb is a huge directory of scholarships (perhaps the largest?) Students sign up by creating a name and password, along with preferences and academic/extracurricular information. The search engine will pull up a huge list of scholarships tailored to their background.

CollegeBoard also has a nice, searchable database of scholarships. (Searchable by age, background, academic interest, etc)

**Be sure to mention to your students that any Mississippi resident (who decides to attend a college/university in Mississippi) with a GPA of 2.5 and an ACT score of 15 qualifies to recieve MTAG -- a state grant of $500-1,000 a year for college.

Scholarships for Seniors

McDonald's scholarship - minimum of $1000 awards.  I think they have to work there while in school, but not sure.

Coca-cola scholars.  Deadline October 31, 2007$20,000 for national scholars, $10,000 for regional, renewable for four years.

First Family Scholarship from Catawba College in North Carolina.  Accepted students may compete for $14,500 to full-ride scholarships.  Invitation-only for first-generation students.

Scholarships and Fellowships for Underclassmen

Earthwatch Fellowship - 12 to 20 days working with a scientist on a project anywhere in the world.  Full funding provided for 100 students each year.

Questbridge College Prep Scholarship - for Juniors.

A Better Chance - 6th-10th grade (apply for the following years of high school/middle school). Program for minorities to apply to private boarding schools, independent schools, and excellent public schools across the country. ABC isn't a scholarship program, per se, but it does place students in schools who will then (usually) offer huge financial aid packages. Students who are placed in day schools/public schools live in a "community house", with a handful of other ABC students and a local family.
