S-V agreement

Page history last edited by scotty 1 yr ago

 Name: Scotty Jiménez

Subject: English I

Approximate Time: 50 minutes

Objectives: TSW reapply the rules of subject-verb agreement to sentences with varying problems that were covered in the previously given rule sheet. (MDE 4.a.5)

TSW identify prepositions and prepositional phrases.

Materials: Overhead

          Overhead transparencies

Set: Cinderella and Prince Charming. Story of how the stepsisters and stepmother tried to get in the way between the love of C & PC. Well we have the same kind of conflict here in our classroom today. Let’s say C is the subject and PC is the verb. We already talked last class how the verb and the subject HAVE to match right? No matter what, the verb (PC) will always correspond to the subject of the sentence (C). However, there are also what we call prepositional phrases which have their own subject, just like C’s stepsisters and stepmother. Do we want PC to marry SS and SM? No, he can only go with C. So we have to be careful to not match PC (verb) with SS and SM. When we have PC with C, the glass slipper fits and everyone lives happily ever after.

Procedures:

1) review prep phrases

2) Discuss difficult rules (And, or/nor, collective nouns, etc.) with examples from Do Now. C and PC with examples 7 and 8, lead into prep phrases.

3) Give many examples of prepositions and identify the preposition and the object of the prepositional phrase and how this phrase describes the original subject.

4) Add phrases to a sentence over and over again.

5) Review and repeat S-V material and rules covered in previous class (Wed.) Bonus points for those who wrote down rule numbers by appropriate examples on worksheet.

6) Madlib activity

Closure: Review subject-verb agreement and prepositional phrases. Stress elimination or hiding prep. phrases in order to find true subject to which the verb will correspond.

Assessment:

Informal- Teacher will ask questions (M) in regards to subject-verb agreement and the identification of prepositions and prepositional phrases (C).

Teacher will make sure students can add many prepositional phrases while still being able to connect the verb to its correct corresponding subject.

Formal- Students will take a quiz on subject-verb agreement during following period.
