Punnett and Pedigree

Page history last edited by Christina Jordan 1 yr ago

Name:  Christina Stewart-Jordan

Subject:  Biology I - Genetics

Date:  July 14, 2008

Period:  1st

Approximate Time:  100 minutes

Objective(s):

1.TSW create Punnett Squares of gene inheritance (DOK 4, Biology 5.e).

2.TSW create Pedigrees of gene inheritance (DOK 4, Biology 5.e).

Do Now:

In pea plants, a tall stalk (T) is dominant to a short stalk (t).  What are the expected genotypes and phenotypes of the offspring created when a heterozygous dominant pea plant is crossed with another heterozygous dominant pea plant? (Use fractions & ratios)

(10 minutes)

Set:

TSW review the previous day's lesson by completing and discussing the Do Now.  TTW state that the students will practice creating Punnett Squares, in order to make Pedigrees of the expected outcome.  After we are done practicing with Punnett Squares, we will read about Pedigrees and begin creating them.  So, today we will be using the expected outcomes from the Punnett Squares we made to create a Pedigree of the expected outcome of the next generation of children.

(5 minutes)

Procedure:

1.TTW will begin discussion of the Do Now.  TSW create their genotypes and phenotypes using ratios and fractions: genotypes- w/ fractions, phenotypes w/ ratios

[Say “down” & “across” when explaining and show ways to check answers.] (5 minutes)

2.TTW pass out the Pedigree Analysis worksheet and randomly select students to read the paragraphs.  Include P1, F1, F2, F3 & their meanings.  (15 minutes)

3.TTW have the students create a Pedigree of the Do Now.  (3 minutes)

4.TTW select a student to display their pedigree on the board, to be discussed with the class.

(5 minutes)

5.TSW begin Punnett Square and Pedigree activity, prompting the students to make a Pedigree of four generations of a family that carry & exhibit the gene for sickle cell anemia [Activity #2].

Randomly select students to read the activity & create a Pedigree based off the crosses on their worksheet.)– (40 minutes)

6.TSW work practice problems on Punnett Squares and Pedigrees until the bell rings.

(12 minutes).

7.Closure

Closure:  (Worksheet/ Closure/ Assessment

TTW state that today the students demonstrated their knowledge of genetics by creating Punnett Square crosses.  Then, the students used their knowledge of gene inheritance to create pedigrees, showing the possibility of certain traits being passed to from the parent to the offspring.  TTW review the day's lesson by prompting the students to present and explain their Pedigrees, telling which members of the generations are expected to inherit sickle cell anemia.

Class is dismissed!  (5 minutes)

Assessment/ Evaluation:

Objective(s):

1.  TSW create Punnett Squares of gene inheritance (DOK 4, Biology 5.e).

Informal:  TTW listen and watch (M) as the students create and present different Punnett Squares of gene inheritance (C).

Formal:  TSW will be graded on their classwork (M) based on their ability to create and present Punnett Squares (C).  TTW record a grade of complete [5/5] in the grade book (D).

2.  TSW create Pedigrees of gene inheritance (DOK 4, Biology 5.e).

Informal:  TTW listen and watch (M) as the students create and present different Pedigrees of gene inheritance (C).

Formal:  TSW will be graded on their classwork (M) based on their ability to create Pedigrees for gene inheritance, (C).  TTW record a grade of complete [5/5] in the grade book (D).  [total:10/10]
