Biology I

Natural Selection – June 21, 2007

Approximate time: 50 minutes

Objectives: TSW

1.Identify characteristics of kingdoms Protista and Fungi. 6b.

Materials:

Whiteboard, overheard, transparencies, vis-a-vis markers, Fungi and Protist worksheet

Warm-up:

1.What are the three components of a typical virus?

2.Viruses reproduce during the _________ cycle.

3.How are some bacteria harmful? How are some bacteria helpful?

Set: (review, objectives, involve, relevance)

Say, “Yesterday, we compared the structures and impacts of Kingdom Monera (bacteria) and viruses. Today, we will identify the characteristics of the final kingdoms, Protista, and Fungi. I asked you yesterday why bother studying bacteria and viruses. Why is it important or relevant to study protists and fungi? Had you even heard of a protist before this class? Who has ever eaten bread? You have all benefited from a food produced with the help of a fungus, yeast. Who uses toothpaste? You have all benefited from a product that contains a material made from a protist. Just as it is important to be familiar with the characteristics of animals and plants, bacteria and viruses, so it is to learn about fungi and protists.”

Procedures:

1.Give notes on Protists (animal-like, plant-like, fungus-like) and on Fungi (roles, reproduction, and importance).

2.Have students complete worksheet. Collect.

3.Review worksheet.

4.Question technique: have students write down the “muddiest parts of the lesson” (topics that remain unclear or questions they have). Collect and review for addressing tomorrow.

Closure: (restate, review, involve, preview)

Say, “What did we learn about today? We identified the characteristics of the Kingdoms Fungi and Protista and some of the ways humans use them. What is a fungus? What are the types? What is a protist? What are the types? How are they similar, how are they different? We have now described, compared, and contrasted the 6 (5) kingdoms....which are? Tomorrow, we will spend the day reviewing the material thus far before we take the test.”

Assessment:

Informal: TTW observe students working during class and review the questions put on cards for reteaching.

Formal: TTW grade warm-up and worksheet, checking for mastering of viral reproduction and  anatomy, affects bacteria have on other organisms, and      protist and fungi topics. TTW grade a unit test on the 6 kingdoms that will be taken in the next class period. All grades will be     recorded in the grade book.
