Biology I
Natural Selection – June 20, 2007
Approximate time: 50 minutes
Objectives: TSW
1.Compare the structures and functions of viruses and bacteria relating their impact on other organisms. 6d
2.Review main vertebrate groups. 6c
Materials:
Whiteboard, markers, vertebrate practice worksheet, monera and viruses worksheet, transparencies, vis-a-vis pens
Warm-up:
Vertebrate practice worksheet.
Set: (review, objectives, involve, relevance)
Say, “Yesterday, we described the characteristics of the main groups of Chordates (vertebrates): fishes, birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. At the end of the period, time permitting, we will review and practice classifying organisms into these groups. But first we will compare the structures and functions of viruses and bacteria and relate their impact on other organisms. Why study viruses and bacteria, I mean, who cares? You can't see them. Who here has ever had a cold? The flu? Chicken pox? You have all at one time or another come into direct contact with viruses. Who has had a cavity? Strep throat? Who has eaten yogurt? Cheese? You have all at one time or another encountered bacteria, eaten a product made with the help of bacteria, or had your food broken down for you by bacteria in your colon. Both of these organisms, even though we can't see them, have immense importance in our lives."
Procedures:
1.Give notes on Monera (Archaebacteria, Eubacteria) and viruses using transparencies.
2.Have students make a chart comparing the two groups on the board.
3.Have students complete worksheet on Monera and viruses.
4.Guide students in review Vertebrate Matching game, time permitting.
Closure: (restate, review, involve, preview)
Say, “Today we discussed and compared viruses and bacteria and their impacts on other organisms. How are bacteria and viruses alike? How are they different? What are some ways in which we encounter viruses everyday? Bacteria? (We also reviewed the main groups of vertebrates.) Tomorrow, we will identify the main characteristics of Kingdoms Protista and Fungi. On Friday, we will have a review of the 6 kingdoms followed by a test. Homework tonight is to study!”
Assessment:
Informal: TTW observe students during matching review game, noting areas of strength and of weakness.
Formal: TTW grade the warm-up on vertebrates and the worksheet on Monera and viruses, checking for accuracy and comprehension of the material. The grades will be recorded in the grade book.
