Biology I

Natural Selection – June 26, 2007

Approximate time: 50 minutes

Objectives: TSW

1. Correct mistakes on test and review relevant material. 6a, 6b, 6c, 6d.

Materials:

tests, textbooks, notes

Warm-up:

Do word find until the bell rings.

Set: (review, objectives, involve, relevance)

Say, “Yesterday, we began a new unit on natural selection. However, after grading your tests on taxonomy and the kingdoms, I believe the class will benefit from taking today to review them and make corrections on the parts that were marked wrong. We will spend today's class finding the correct answers to each question using our notes, marking the correct answers, and explaining why the former answer was wrong. Doing so will allow you to receive half credit added to your test. For example, if you scored a 40—you may earn 30 points (half of 60) by correcting your test. The aim is that not only will our grades be improved, but our understanding of the material as well. Questions?”

Procedures:

1.Give instructions.

2.Hand out tests, and have students correct them and hand them in.

Closure: (restate, review, involve, preview)

Say, “Today, we were able to review material from the last unit on taxonomy and the kingdoms by correcting our tests for half-credit. Who feels their understanding of the subject matter has increased? Stayed the same? Tomorrow, we will return to our investigation of natural selection among different species.”

Assessment:

Informal: TTW observe students working on tests.

Formal: TTW regrade tests and explanations for accuracy and effort. The grades will be recorded in the grade book.
