Biology I

June 19, 2008

 3rd Period

50 minutes

Objectives: TSW

1.Identify characteristics of the kingdoms Protista and Fungi.  (Science 6b, DOK I)

Materials:

Writing utensils, paper, transparencies, vis-a-vis markers, computer lab, worksheet

Bell Work:

1)What is the function of flagella on a bacteria?

2)A microscope slide shows pink, spiral-shaped bacteria.  What is the scientific name for this shape of bacteria?

3)Name one kind of disease that is caused by harmful bacteria. (3 minutes)

Set:

--TTW review yesterday's lesson by discussing the bell work questions.  Today, we will identify the characteristics of two more kingdoms, protista and fungi.  Start off with a brainstorm of 'good' and 'bad' ways that fungus impacts humans on the board.  We will start off by talking about the kingdom fungi today.  (4 minutes)

Procedures:

1.TTW discuss the characteristics of fungi, including structure, reproduction, and symbiotic relationships using transparencies.  As an aide, a powerpoint presentation will be shown to give visual examples of the material.  8 minutes

2.TTW discuss the characteristics of protists, including animal-like, plant-like, and fungi-like protists using transparencies.  As an aide, a powerpoint presentation will be shown to give visual examples of the material.  8 minutes

TSW view videos depicting the motion of protists.  (the protist, protozoa, algae, and fungus-like protists; vorticella feeding)  (4)

In the computer lab, the TSW read independently a tutorial (http://www.wisc-online.com/objects/index_tj.asp?objID=BIO304) and answer the questions on the associated worksheet about fungi.  (8 min)

TSW continue to take the quiz—(if time permits.)  (8 min) http://www.biologycorner.com/bio1/protist_quiz.html

TTW review the quiz with the students. (4 minutes)

The class will return to the room.

Closure:  Today we learned how to identify the characteristics of two kingdoms, the Protista and the Fungi.  What types of fungi are there? What is a hyphae?  Do fungi reproduce sexually or asexually?  What three categories of protista are there?  etc.  Tomorrow we will begin to talk about the next kingdom, the Plantae.  (4 minutes)

Assessment: TSW

1.Identify characteristics of the kingdoms Protista and Fungi.  (Science 6b, DOK I)

Informal: TTW observe (M) students complete the computer activities (C)

Formal: TTW include the material on the unit test (M) that will ask the student to demonstrate understanding of the structure of fungi, fungi reproduction, and protist characteristics as plant-like, animal-like, and fungi-like (C)  The test grade will be documented in the gradebook (D).
