Name: Teacher Team/ Lisa Shaffren
Subject: Biology I
Period: 1st Period
Time: 50 minute per period.
Objectives:
The student will model correct classroom procedures.
The student will observe consequences of inappropriate behavior.
The student will determine the meaning of each expectation within the classroom setting.
Materials: Pencils, trash, and possibly other materials for demonstrations, copies of the syllabus including expectations and procedures, classroom management posters (expectations and consequences, one each), marble jar.
Set: What prevents people from breaking laws? What happens if you break a law? There are consequences. Why do you think we need laws? What would happen if people did not follow important laws?
Today we will be discussing some expectations and procedures for this classroom, as well as the consequences if they are not followed, to make sure we have the best environment for learning. (State objectives here).
Procedures
1) Hand out syllabus.
2) Explain the expectations and consequences, indicating the posters on the wall.
3) Run through each of the procedures, asking a student to model each correct procedure, and drawing student attention to important materials for each procedure within the classroom, such as homework baskets, trash can, pencil sharpener, etc.
4) The teacher runs through a scenario where he or she performs several procedures in a row incorrectly (walks in late, gets up without asking to sharpen a pencil, does not go straight back to his or her seat, cuts in front of other teacher talking, talks while the teacher is talking) and aks the students to identify what went wrong, including what expectations were not met.
5) Teacher asks the class what the consequences of behavior just demonstrated would have been if it has been an actual class. Students indicate what appropriate consequences would be according to classroom management plan/posters.
6) Teacher places several marbles in the marble jar to reward students for focus during the classroom management lesson..
7) If time allows, take a quiz on classroom management. If time does not allow, quiz will be tomorrow’s warm-up.
Quiz:
1) What are the expectations of this class?
2) What are the consequences?
3) What are the rewards?
4) What is the procedure for going to the bathroom?
5) What is the procedure for throwing out a piece of trash?
6) What is the procedure for sharpening a pencil?
7) What is the procedure for handing in homework?
8) What is the procedure for asking a question?
9) What is the procedure for coming in late?
10) What should you do if you miss a class?
Closure:
Today we discussed the expectations, consequences, and procedures that will need to be following to have a fun, productive summer. (Restate objectives). What are the expectations? What are the consequences? What are the rewards? These practices will go into effect immediately. Next class we will begin natural selection.
Assessment:
Informal: The teacher will observe (M) student participation in class.
Formal: The student will take a graded (D) quiz (M) on classroom procedures, expectations and consequences (C).
