Course Description:

Biology I is an introductory, laboratory-based course designed to study living organisms and their physical environment. Students should apply scientific methods of inquiry and research in examination of the following topics: chemical basis of life; cell structure, function, and reproduction; energy; molecular basis of genetics; natural selection and diversity; and ecology. Biology I is a graduation requirement worth 1 credit. The student must also pass the State Biology Test, which will be taken in April to meet graduation requirements.

Class Management

Rule 1- Be in class on time and prepared.

Rule 2- Remain in your seat until given permission to move.

Rule 3-Respect yourself and others.

A discipline plan will be followed to ensure success for everyone.

**Warning

**Contact parents

**Office referral

This will not necessarily be followed in this order, it depends on the problem.

Absences and Makeup Work

When you are absent, it is your responsibility to make up work. Look in the absent notebook located at the back of the class for the assignments that were missed. If you are absent when an assignment is due, it will be turned in the day you return. If a student is absent, he or she is given up to three (3) days to make up the missed assignment. This also includes chapter tests.

Assignments

Daily Assignments: There will be assignments given regularly in class, some will be done during the class hour and some will be given as homework. *Late work will not be accepted.

Laboratory work:  Work in the lab will be done by all classes at different intervals during the year based on progress in the classroom. Lab safety will be emphasized. Room D16 is a classroom/lab and will accommodate most of the labs that will be performed.

Quizzes:  Quizzes are a wonderful way for me to know how students are doing before test time. The majority will be announced and will cover small amounts of material.

Tests:  Tests will be a combination of MC, completion, analyze graphs, explanation, and discussion. I will file and keep your test papers for you. You will be allowed to study your test folders in class for 9 weeks test and exams. *No study guides will be given.

Grading

80% of your nine weeks average will be composed of the following:  The # designates how many times this grade will be recorded in the grade book. A grading sheet will be given every nine weeks so students can keep up with their own grades. No progress reports will be printed except at the time given. Parent connect is updated daily.

Things you should know

The bell does not dismiss you from class. I will dismiss you from the door.

You may go to the office only in the case of an emergency. I generally do not let students leave my classroom.

Bring your textbook, notebook, pen/pencil to class everyday. You will not be allowed to go to your locker during class time or borrow supplies from the teacher.
