ACT English Test – Grammar and Usage
Error #1: Incorrect Pronoun Agreement or Case
-pronoun (he, she, us...) doesn't agree with its noun
Any young boy who watched the first moon landing probably wished that they could become an astronaut.
*If underlined portion has a pronoun, PAY ATTENTION to see if it matches its noun!!
These words use singular pronouns (like: he, she, it)
anybody somebody everybody nobody
anyone someone everyone either
each neither
-the pronouns “whom” and “who” are mixed up
(“Whom” is ONLY used after a preposition. “Who” is never after one!)
Before the moon landing, the TV announcer gave background on the astronauts, about whom we were interested.
The students, who had been studying the space program, were thrilled to witness the lunar landing.
Error #2: Subject-verb Agreement
- verb doesn't match with subject
The best moment during a broadcast filled with many great moments were when the astronaut stepped out of the lunar lander and bounced.
-verb doesn't match with pronoun
Each of these moments have played in my mind again as I try to recapture the excitement of that moment.
-verb isn't in right tense (past, present, or future)
Sam is walking down the street when he found a large suitcase.
**If an underlined portion includes a verb, check the AGREEMENT and the TENSE (one is most likely wrong!)
